What it is
Ganesh Chaturthi welcomes Lord Ganesha into homes and public pandals. The main worship is at midday (Madhyahna). Celebrations can last one and a half, three, five, seven or ten days, ending on Anant Chaturdashi with the visarjan.
Traditional significance
Ganesha is honoured first in every undertaking as the remover of obstacles and the lord of beginnings, wisdom and good fortune. Modaks, his favourite sweet, are offered.
History and culture
In Maharashtra, Lokmanya Tilak transformed the festival into a large public celebration in 1893. Many families now choose clay idols that dissolve gently in water, caring for rivers and seas.
