What it is
Holika Dahan is the bonfire lit on Phalguna Purnima, in the evening (Pradosh) while the Purnima tithi prevails. Many families avoid the Bhadra period when choosing the exact time.
Traditional significance
The fire symbolises the burning away of ego and negativity, and the protection of sincere devotion.
History and culture
The story tells of young Prahlad, devoted to Vishnu, who sat in a fire with the demoness Holika. Holika, who believed herself protected, was burned; Prahlad walked out unharmed.
A suggested practice
Write it, release it · about 5 minutes
- Write down one habit or worry you are ready to release.
- Read it once, kindly, and thank it for what it taught you.
- Tear the paper and dispose of it safely (never leave a flame unattended).
Affirmation
I release what no longer serves me.
Reflection question
