What it is
Ostara is celebrated at the spring equinox, the moment the Sun crosses the celestial equator and day and night are close to equal.
Traditional significance
Eggs, seeds, hares and spring flowers are symbols of new life. It is a time to plant intentions and bring the light and dark of our lives into balance.
History and culture
The name comes from Ēostre, a spring goddess mentioned by the English monk Bede in the 8th century. Its use for the equinox festival is modern.
A suggested practice
Plant a seed · about 5 minutes
- Plant a real seed in a pot, or write an intention on a slip of paper.
- Name what you would like to grow this season.
- Choose one simple way to tend it each week.
Affirmation
I am ready to grow.
Reflection question
What would I like to bring into balance?
The Wheel of the Year as celebrated today is a modern Pagan calendar, gathered in the mid-20th century from older Celtic and Germanic seasonal festivals. South of the equator, most people turn the wheel by six months to follow their own seasons, and this calendar does the same for southern cities.
