What it is
Vishu marks the Sun’s entry into Mesha. The day is the first sunrise after the Mesha Sankranti. Before dawn the Vishukkani is arranged: golden konna flowers, rice, fruit, a cucumber, a mirror, gold or coins, a sacred text and a lit nilavilakku lamp.
Traditional significance
Seeing a beautiful and abundant sight first thing (Kani) is believed to set the tone for the year. Elders give Vishukkaineetam (a gift of coins) to children and family; the day ends with a feast (Vishu sadya).
History and culture
Vishu is celebrated across Kerala and the coastal regions of Karnataka (as Bisu). The golden konna (Indian laburnum) blooms right at this season.
A suggested practice
Your own Kani · about 5 minutes
- Tonight, place a few things that mean abundance to you where you will see them on waking.
- In the morning, look at them before your phone.
- Breathe and name one hope for the year.
Affirmation
I begin this year by seeing what is good.
Reflection question
What would I like to “see first” each morning this year?
